The Netherlands is the fourth largest mushroom producer in the world. Only the United States, China and Poland produce more. At the moment, the production in our country is 275 million kilograms of mushrooms a year. Eighty percent of the total production of mushrooms in the Netherlands is exported, sixty-five percent of which as preserved food. This makes the mushroom an important export product in the area of preserved vegetables and the Netherlands is the largest exporting country of mushrooms. The largest part of the export of preserved foods goes to Germany. The market of fresh mushrooms mainly takes place in Germany, England, France, Scandinavia and in our own country. In 2009 a total of 49,700 tonnes of mushrooms were exported. The cultivation of mushrooms and the mushroom industry take up a considerable part in our national agricultural production and must not be underestimated in the Dutch economy.
